My dear friend Jane taught me Mahjong earlier this year and I almost immediately became OBSESSED. The tiles are so beautiful. The designs, the ASMR of them clacking together - sometimes I just dig my hands into a big bag of tiles to hear them clack around! And don’t even get me started on the mats and the dice trays….
But as I kept playing, I got tired of looking at mahjong tiles that look too much alik. But at the same time, I’m turned off by designs that are just printed on instead of engraved, tiles that don’t have the right “heft” when you hold them in your hand, and tiles that might have a cool theme to start but the theme falls apart halfway through the execution.
As anyone who knows me knows, I. LOVE. A. THEME.
So naturally, I designed my own set of tiles. Though my interior decorating work spans many aesthetics, there was no question as to which aesthetic my tile set would be in.
MID MOD MAHJ is a completely original mahjong set inspired by the aesthetic I love most: midcentury modern (aka “mid mod”) design, ridiculously good furniture, weird little objects, bold graphics, and the general belief that everything is better with a little more teak. And it wouldn’t be me if there weren’t little “easter eggs” (nods to design icons, visual puns, and a heavy dose of whimsy). This is the kind of set where you might discover something new about it every time you play.
I'm currently in the pre-production/sample stage, which means I'm obsessing over colors, finishes, tiny details, and whether I have completely lost my mind.
